Bass River Rod & Gun Club - April Newsletter

Every once in a while, something just fits. That’s the way it goes. We try plenty of new things in our life … a new car, a dog, a new gun, a new job. Some don’t feel right, and no matter what you do, it doesn’t fit, and you move on. Sometimes the fit is good, you like it, and you want it to work … but it doesn’t like you back … and you move on.
Every once in a great while, everything lines up on both sides, and it works… It fits. It doesn’t happen often, and we can probably count a lifetime’s worth of these on a single hand. From my viewpoint, President Doug Nelson and our Club just fit. Doug brought his long history of caring for the club with him when he joined the head table, and you’re still as likely to see him with a tool over his shoulder as if it were a shotgun there. As President, Doug moved from fixing and improving things on his own to doing it with others. He sought a wide variety of opinions and made his decisions, easy or hard, based on what he felt was right for the club. The fit became good for him.
The club has shown overwhelming support for his leadership over the last 2 years, and the fit was good for the club. I believe that in those 2 years, we have been part of an “Every Once in a Great While” event, and the club has grown measurably under Doug’s leadership.
It has been my pleasure to serve on his team.
In a few weeks, Doug will resume a role as Director, and you’ll likely see him back on the club grounds with a tool (or gun) on his shoulder. If you do, please take a moment and thank him for his Club leadership over the last 2 years.
Respectfully,
Dan Paige - Vice President

We'd like to thank Phil Rogers for donating two shotguns to our scholastic shotgun program. Phil is the consummate volunteer - mowing the shotgun fields, maintaining machines, helping new shooters, coaching our team. It would be impossible to operate our club without committed volunteers like Phil.
Due to the number of new youngsters, our shotgun team could use more guns. If you've got a semi-automatic or over and under shotgun gathering dust, you could help the next germination of shotgunners by donating a gun to the team. We're looking for 12 gauge - especially youth guns or guns with wood stocks that we can modify for our younger shooters. If you have a gun you'd like to donate, please contact Head Coach Arthur by clicking HERE.

Conservation Camp Scholarship
|
|
Teens who like the outdoors will love Conservation Camp! Designed for girls and boys aged 13–17, the Massachusetts Junior Conservation Camp offers a hands-on curriculum focused on outdoor skills, conservation, and ethics. During the two-week overnight camp, teens can try new outdoor activities, improve their current skills, and meet like-minded peers. The MJCC will be held at the Moses Scout Reservation in Russell from August 3–15, 2025.
Campers gain a variety of skills during their two weeks at camp. Professionals from environmental agencies provide hands-on experiences and demonstrations on topics including wildlife, fisheries, forest fire control, and forest management. Experienced and enthusiastic outdoors men and women teach fishing, camping, wild foods, archery, and firearms shooting and safety. In addition, campers have the opportunity to earn certifications in Basic Hunter Education and Boating Safety.
Tuition is $1,150, but the members of Bass River Rod & Gun Club provide one scholarship to a child of a member, and if no member child is presented, we offer the scholarship to the community at large. If you’re interested, please contact Julie Robillard at (774) 279-6530, or email her at jrobillard35@comcast.net.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss

Bass River Rod & Gun Club thrives with active member participation. Despite an expanding volunteer base, we face a common challenge - 80% of the work is done by 20% of our members. To realize our full potential, members' time, talents, and dues are essential.
We need your help in filling the following positions:
Fish Counters: We're looking for fish counters to determine if our efforts to restock river herring in Matthews Pond has worked. Fish counting is easy duty and it's a great way to make our club just a little bit better.
E-Mail Bryan Howes for information by clicking HERE.
Wednesday Worker’s Chair: this position coordinates and supervises the work of our Wednesday Workers.
To hear more about these positions, please email us by clicking HERE.

In order to use the Indoor Range and the Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Ranges, Members must complete the Safe Range Orientation Program - it is in two parts. The Program is staffed by NRA Range Safety Officers who have been providing extra help and refresher instruction to our members. In the end, keeping the Bass River firing ranges safe is the best way to ensure the continuation of the Club into the future. Classes are offered each month, weather permitting.
